The code numbers for wells
Where an egress window sits below grade, the well must give a minimum horizontal area of 9 square feet, with a minimum projection and width of 36 inches — and it must let the window open completely. Wells deeper than 44 inches need a permanently affixed ladder or steps. If the window sits under a deck or porch, there must be at least 36 inches of clearance above the well.
